The possible release of a smaller screen iPhone, the sequel to the iPhone SE, has been one of the most rumored items online over the past several months. As the year 2019 comes to a close, the prediction is that Apple may launch this device with the dawn of the New Year 2020. It’s time to take stock of where it stands now.
The Rumors So Far
There has been no official word yet from Apple on the possible release of the iPhone SE2 or whatever name is given to the phone. Whatever has been circulated as information has been educated guesses, led by Ming-Chi Kuo.
It has been suggested that the display size of the new phone will be 4.7-inches. The display is expected to be an LCD panel and the form factor resembling the iPhone 8. The speculation is that Apple may decide to provide wireless charging on this device and therefore the rear of the iPhone SE2 will be glass instead of metal. The significant specification will be the A-13 Bionic chipset as the processor. This is the processor that is driving Apple’s latest iPhones in the market.
No Face ID; Only Touch ID
Being a low-priced model, Apple may not go with Face ID in the new iPhone. Touch ID will be the tool to unlock the device, the speculations indicate. The single rear camera will be 12MP. There is no clarity on the resolution of the front camera. Smartphones have moved much beyond the single-digit megapixel resolutions of the past even for the front cameras.
You can expect improvements in the battery size and performance over the iPhone SE. There is speculation on what Apple will decide to call this phone as; some say it will be iPhone SE2 while others claim it could be iPhone 9.
Launch Date and Price
There is no clarity on this either. There were some firm indications from the speculators that it would be early 2020. This was expected to mean the first quarter of the year. Now, the indications are that it would be towards the end of the quarter, March 2020. This is based more on the previous trends the company had followed holding launch events in the month of March.
The pricing is another important factor everyone is keen to know. The current indications suggest the iPhone SE2 should be priced at less than $500. Some suggested it could be fixed at $399. All these are still rumors and difficult to confirm. Apple may not want the new phone to eat into the sale of its existing models.
More information could emerge as the launch date nears.
