The 2020 iPhone is expected to have a huge design change and is rumored to bring back the design style of the iPhone 4. Among other leaks and speculations, a new report suggests that the iPhone 12 will feature a 120Hz ProMotion display.
Currently, the Apple iPad Pro lineup of tablets feature the ProMotion display with refresh rates of 120Hz. If the 2020 iPhones come with 120Hz ProMotion displays, it would be a huge improvement from the current 60Hz displays that iPhones use.
2020 iPhones Rumored to Have a 120Hz Display
Digitimes, a Taiwanese news website, has posted a report where it suggests that the 2020 iPhones will get the 120HzProMotion displays, which are present in the iPad Pro lineup of tablets. With a 120Hz display, the iPhone could rival the Pixel 4 that also has the same display.
The report says that the 2020 iPhones will feature a high refresh rate OLED panel. In contrast, the iPad Pro’s ProMotion display is an LCD one. This means that the OLED panels that we have grown to love on the iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max will not be changed to incorporate the ProMotion feature.
What is the ProMotion Display?
The first ProMotion displays were introduced by Apple in 2017 with that year’s iPad Pro lineup. It made the user interface of the iPad more realistic and intuitive to use. The addition of a 120HzProMotion display to the 2020 iPhone lineup will allow for a more immersive UI experience due to an increase in the responsiveness of the display and reduced latency.
ProMotion technology is optimized to increase the refresh rate of those areas of the screen where it is required to. Only the portions of the screen that display high refresh rate content will have this technology-enabled.
On the other hand, the display can also reduce the refresh rate at certain static areas like toolbars, notification bars, etc. to 24Hz when a high refresh rate is not needed. This feature saves battery life by reducing the power consumption by the display.
2020 iPhone Rumors and Expected Launch
The 2020 iPhone lineup is expected to have a complete design overhaul with the design scheme going back to that of the iPhone 4 with flat edges and back. It is also expected to have 5G support which was missing in the iPhone 11. No official release dates for the iPhone 12 are available yet. However, since the iPhone 11 was released in September 2019, we can expect the iPhone 12 to be released in September 2020.
