Apple, once again, is in the news. This time for a weird reason! Apple Park in Cupertino, California, has recently witnessed several employees of Apple running into glass walls and getting hurt. As a result, emergency services (911) were called in the campus.
The San Francisco Chronicle acquired the transcript of some of the calls between Apple security and 911 emergency response services. However, none of the injuries was of the serious nature. This speaks a lot about the design of the Apple campus and thought the process of creating a building that does not connect people but hurt them.
Last year, the Chief Design Officer, Jony Ive emphatically ruled out flaws in the design saying, “are utterly bizarre, because it wasn’t made for you! And I know how we work and you don’t!” No matter how proud Apple is of its new campus and no matter how many million dollars have been spent, it did not solve the basic human problem.
Now in order to save itself from public scrutiny and embarrassment, Foster + Partners, the Apple park architects, have decided to add the stickers on the glasses across the building to ensure no employee runs into the glass. However, none is sure if these are the same glass stickers, which were placed before 31st December or the new ones. It is noteworthy that similar stickers were placed earlier, which were termed as “distraction from the design” and removed later.
The transcript obtained by the San Francisco Chronicles clearly indicates the tensed voice of Apple security officials during this incident. The worst part is that 3 such incidents have taken place so far on the campus that houses 12000 employees.
In an interview to Wired, Jony Ive confessed that it was frustrating to talk about that building in terms of absurd, large numbers. Contradicting his statement in Washington last year, Ive said, “It makes for an impressive statistic, but you don’t live in an impressive statistic. While it is a technical marvel to make glass at this scale, that is not the achievement. The achievement is to make a building where so many people can connect and collaborate and walk and talk.”
