Solution No: 1. Delete the messages

Your iPhone’s capacity is full, or you have a large number of saved messages and heavy texting conversations. Deleting some of those messages and conversations can be very helpful. Open the Messaging app and delete the messages.

Solution: 2. Force an app to close

Try force-quitting your SMS application in order to reboot the program and solve unresponsive problems. You can do this from the Recent Apps bar. Once you have closed the application you can launch it again. Here is what to do:

  • Tap on the Home button two times
  • Find the Message app
  • Swipe up and close it
  • Go back to the Home screen and launch the app.

Solution No: 3: Restart your iPhone

The restart can fix a wide range of issues because once you reset your device, the apps and processes that are running in the background will be closed and you will free up the memory, thus, your device will perform much better. To restart your iPhone, press and hold the sleep/wake button, drag the slider and turn it off. When your iPhone is off, press and hold the sleep/wake button to turn it back on.

Solution No: 4. Update iOS

Although the iPhone regularly reminds its customers that it is time to update the operating system, some users tend to ignore it. However, outdated iOS can be the reason that causes the freezing. To check your device for updates, check the ‘Software Update’ and follow the instructions given on the screen.
Tap Settings > General > Software Update. Tap Download and Install.

Solution No: 5. Reset to factory settings

Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings. Tap Erase iPhone to confirm the action.

The fact is, one of these 5 ways to fix iPhone 5 freezing when texting will definitely do the trick, and the problem will be gone. Just have some patience, and you will find out which one works for you.

  1. I was having this problem and tried everything. I even tried all your suggestions. While in my messenger, after all messages were deleted and still having these issues. I stumbled on the problem. I block telemarketers phone numbers and have since I got my phone. I deleted all of them and bam! My phone works.

  2. The keyboard of my iPhone5 was always freezing while texting, in particular when I had to write more than a single line, or use emoji. I did the reset of settings (not contents, so I did not lose my data), and now my iPhone5 is as fast as it was when I bought it! I strongly suggest to try and do the reset of settings, even 2 or 3 times it could help.
